Connecting the dots between urban infrastructure, well-being, livability, and equity: a data-driven approach

Abstract Developing sustainable, livable and equitable cities is a major policy goal. However, livability metrics are amorphous, emphasizing different dimensions. This paper develops novel data-driven approach by directly surveying subjective well-being (SWB) of urban residents, alongside satisfaction with key social–ecological–infrastructural–urban correlates to inform equity priorities. Our survey in quantifying SWB (Cantril ladder) residents evaluating both household- neighborhood-level while addressing confounding effects socio-demographics personality. We propose three-way typology provisioning systems—foundational, consistently important added-bonus—based on their quantitative relationship SWB. Implemented the Twin-Cities USA, among 21 attributes, home heating-cooling, neighborhood greenery, access public transportation snow removal emerged as foundational cold Minnesota climates; size was streets an added-bonus. Assessing inequality categories revealed disparities income race, informing local infrastructure priorities for equity. Key insights sufficiency sustainability.
